On Vox: below the belt

View Anil ଅନିଲ୍’s Blog

Jason linked to a great Ben McGrath story in the New Yorker, but I was bit bothered by some of the flippantly dismissive stuff in the article. The piece is about Gravy getting shot in front of Hot 97, and about how the carpenters who own the Hot 97 building are fussing about it, even though they're mobbed up gangstas themselves.

Michael Koppelman's Blog

Just found this, though it's an older post:  Michael Koppelman's PodCasts about his time working with Prince. Koppelman was the engineer on a bunch of great Prince tracks but also had the misfortune to be behind the desk on some of the really weak protege shit in the early 90s.

The podcast has some great stories from a (stoned-sounding) Koppelman, and the most telling statement is that those albums (especially Diamonds and Pearls and the Symbol album) were so uneven that even Prince himself later distanced himself from the work. So, if you hate Tony M as much as all of us, but still love some of the great tracks like those on the Batman album or some of the Grafitti Bridge album cuts, go listen to the podcast.

I'm just glad he's on Movable Type. It's like we both appreciate each other's work!

Interview with Alan Leeds

Prince.org has a great interview entitled "ALAN LEEDS - THE QUESTIONS, THE ANSWERS & MORE BESIDES....", with some terrific insights from Alan Leeds, former tour manager for Prince, James Brown, and D'Angelo, among others. He's also brother to sax fiend Eric Leeds, the Grammy-winning writer of the liner notes to the Star Time box set, and wrote the liners for Prince's Hits set as well. Plus, he's probably the most sane person to ever run a significant part of Prince's affairs.

Having just watched chapters 1-12 of R. Kelly's Trapped in the Closet, here's a list of the best words in the saga:

Real Live Jesus Juice!

I'm delighted to see the Smoking Gun's "Blasphemy In A Bottle" story. "Journalist" Dawn Westlake of CBS, who has covered the Michael Jackson trial extensively, is now cashing in by making a wine called Jesus Juice. Bet they didn't teach that in j-school.

Best part? The label:
