About Anil Dash

Hi, I'm Anil Dash. I'm a blogger and geek living in NYC, and my day job is being a Vice President at Six Apart, the global blogging company which I helped start, and which makes great tools like TypePad and Movable Type that help power sites from Britney to Barack, from the Washington Post to the Huffington Post.

I'm just as proud of my work on dashes.com, my personal website which was founded ten years ago as one of the earliest blogs on the web. (The Houston Chronicle called me a "legendary blogger", which I think was meant as a joke, but is still pretty amusing.) Over the years, I've been featured in newspapers and magazines from the New York Times to the Wall Street Journal to Wired, appeared on TV and radio from PBS and NPR to the BBC and ABC, and acknowledged in serious books like The Long Tail and Wikinomics and in silly books like I Can Has Cheezburger? and Barack Obama Is Your New Bicycle. Perhaps most appropriately, I've also been fortunate to be linked to by blogs all across the web.

Motivations

I strongly believe in the power of self-expression on the web and entrepreneurship as key elements of progressive social change, which explains why my work, writing, and career are all focused on these topics. My work in evangelizing technologies like blogging is grounded in the belief that the best and most important use of technology is as a social communications tool, to connect people together.

A primary goal of my work is to encourage people, especially young people, to start and run socially-responsible businesses both for the possibility of improving their careers and for the knowledge that's gained, which informs the career paths and opportunities of even those who don't choose to remain entrepreneurs.

Anil Dash is Chief Evangelist at Six Apart, Ltd, where he's played a formative role in helping create the world's leading blogging company. Dash is a recognized expert on blogs, web technology, web culture and the software industry, having founded one of the earliest and most popular weblogs on the Internet, which was named one of MSNBC's "Best of Blogs". A frequent keynote speaker, Dash has given presentations around the world about the future of social communication online, the relationship between blogs and traditional media, and business blogging.

Dash's work is frequently featured in media including the the Washington Post, Wired, MSNBC, CNN, ABC News, NPR and on television, radio, print and blogs around the world. His work has been showcased in museums including the New Museum of Contemporary Art, and he has spoken to classes at universities including UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business and Journalism, Columbia University's School of Journalism, and New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. In addition to his professional work, Dash has received notice for his role in popularizing web culture in mainstream media venues ranging from the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal to the Houston Chronicle, which labeled him a "legendary blogger".

Prior to joining Six Apart as its first employee, Dash worked in online communications and technology development for the publishing and music industries.
